Chicago, IL, November 25, 2014 – The American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (AAML), an organization comprised of the nation’s top 1,600 matrimonial attorneys, announced that it has approved a domestic violence resolution that calls for the establishment of a task force to examine how family lawyers can help improve the legal system to better assist victims.

“The AAML is uniquely positioned, by virtue of the daily work of its members with families throughout the nation, to provide leadership in helping to confront the many challenges of domestic violence,” said James McLaren, president of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers.  “We believe that it is vitally important that members of the Academy and all other family lawyers more fully understand that they are in a special role to provide guidance, security and advice to these women, men, and children at the most vulnerable and needy times of their lives.”

The AAML domestic violence task force will be empowered to actively explore collaborations with existing governmental and nongovernmental entities, addressing domestic violence in a variety of communities and providing education for judges, lawyers, legislators and law enforcement on ways to more effectively address domestic violence and its devastating consequences.  The AAML has proudly stood as one of the earliest and most vocal supporters of the current version of the Federal Violence Against Women Act.  The organization firmly believes that domestic violence must be recognized as not only a crime, but an insidious hazard to the well-being of children who observe and experience the trauma.

The American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers Resolution on Domestic Violence has been posted on the group’s website.
