Unchained at Last

Unchained at Last (Unchained), based in Westfield, New Jersey, and the 2025 recipient of the Donn C. Fullenweider Grant, is a survivor-led nonprofit organization, the goal of which is to end forced and child marriage in the United States through direct services and systems change. The organization provides free legal and social services to help individuals escape arranged or forced marriages and rebuild their lives while also advocating for social, policy and legal change, seeking to ban child marriage in every U.S. state and at the federal level. Unchained also conducts research and educates the public and policymakers as a means of promoting these changes.

The provision of pro bono legal services to clients facing urgent legal matters is one of the most important direct services that the organization provides, and in order to assist in recruiting additional pro bono attorneys as its client base expands, the organization plans to offer a Continuing Legal Education (CLE) course for lawyers addressing the intersection between forced/child marriage and family law. The organization also aims to raise awareness of forced and child marriage in the U.S. through this CLE program and to assist family law attorneys in identifying survivors among their own clients and in understanding how to meet their unique legal needs.
