Drinks and Diversity
Please join us for our October Drinks and Diversity on October 9, 2024. Our topic is Generational Trauma and its intersection with Family Law. Generational trauma refers to the emotional, psychological, and even physiological impacts passed down through families, often born from systemic oppression, slavery, colonization, and ongoing racial discrimination. These are not abstract concepts; they affect real people—our clients—in tangible ways. As lawyers, when we encounter clients from diverse backgrounds, many of them are carrying this burden, sometimes without even knowing it.
In our discussion we will explore how generational trauma shapes the behavior, mental health, and trust of our clients, and how it creates additional barriers in their interactions with the legal system. We’ll also discuss how, by acknowledging and understanding this trauma, we can become more empathetic, effective advocates—whether we are litigating, advising, or negotiating on behalf of our clients.
Our speakers will include representatives from movemindfully, an organization which trains nationally with a focus on fostering physical, emotional, and mental health for youth, adults, and families with simple and accessible trauma-responsive mind body practices, and Judge Angela Graves Harrington, the Administrative Judge of the Harris County Board of Family District Judges. Judge Graves-Harrington consistently strives to implement trauma-informed practices and policies in the Harris County child welfare system. Judge Graves-Harrington was selected by the Supreme Court of Texas Children’s Commission to preside over one of only six trauma-informed project courts in Texas.
We look forward to seeing you October 9th!!!
