All of us who work with divorcing families know that money is more than just math. Our clients come to us with their unique financial histories, habits, sensitivities, and sense of what is fair. At the same time, we confront our own habits and beliefs in how we manage our clients and our professional practices. When we are aware of our own financial biases and lenses, we can better serve our clients with compassion.
The field of behavioral finance focuses on these psychological and behavioral aspects of money. At Camp, we will delve into this topic in a three-part money workshop with our guest speaker, Ruth Hayden. We will explore money beliefs and values, how they develop, and how they affect behavior. Then we will apply this understanding to ourselves and our clients and will consider how we and our clients can transcend our financial lenses. The weekend will culminate with a practical skill-building exercise that applies our knowledge of behavioral finance to a complex financial dispute.
